Art review: King Tut at the Dallas Museum of Art

Tutankhamun possessed four miniature coffins fashioned of gold and inlaid with colored glass and semi-precious stones, and each stood in a separate compartment in an alabaster
chest. The band of inscription running down the front names Imseti, one of the sons of Horus, and the goddess Isis, who would protect the deceased and the particular mummified organ within, in this case the liver. The cartouche encircling the king’s name on the interior was reworked and originally had the name of one of Tutankhamun’s relatives. Should you go?

If you or your family are interested in Egyptology or ancient history, consider “Tutankhamun and the Golden Age of the Pharaohs” at the Dallas Museum of Art a must-see exhibit. This is the first and only Southwest stop for the exhibit, and it includes more than 130 beautiful and interesting funerary objects, from carefully carved canopic jars made to contain mummified organs to statues to Egyptian gods.

Though it doesn’t include Tut’s mummy, sarcophagus or death mask, those items aren’t leaving Egypt, so it’s no use fixating on them. The exhibit offers plenty of other gorgeous arts and antiquities to see.

While tickets exhibit tickets are expensive, many Dallas hotels offer packages that include admission. Plus, the tickets allow you to tour the rest of the museum’s massive collections, which include American art from ancient times to the 20th century, ancient Greek and Roman antiquities, and art from African, Asia and the Pacific Islands.

Well, I just got home from Dallas a couple weeks ago…I guess I will be returning sooner rather than later since this exhibit won’t make it to Arizona which is definitely a bummer!!

Sincerely,
Bummed in Phoenix ;)
