Paseo offers arts and education

This is one of about 20 paintings by pastel artist Clive R. Tyler on exhibit at Adelante! Gallery.
My sons and I ventured out into the cool, misty Oklahoma City weather tonight to explore the Paseo Arts District during the monthly Paseo Gallery Walk. As frequent BAM’s Blog readers know, Chris, 14, Gabe, 2, and I often traverse through the streets and galleries of the arts district during the walk.
Despite, or perhaps because of, the less-than-ideal weather, we enjoyed our jaunt through the Paseo. The galleries weren’t as crowded as they sometimes are during the first Friday event, and we actually were able to get a decent parking spot on Paseo.
We also were able to get an indoor table at our official Paseo dining spot, Sauced pizzeria. I just went with a plain cheese slice tonight, the boys opted for variations on sausage, and none of us were disappointed. Plus, we got to hear just a bit of the salsa band playing in the Sauced Annex when we went back to the car.
Typically, my report to you, dear readers, focuses on the art we saw in the Paseo. However, in typical 2-year-old fashion, Gabe wasn’t feeling particularly cooperative, so we had to limit our excursion to just a couple of galleries.
I made it a point to stop by Adelante! Gallery, where wonderful pastel artist Clive R. Tyler of Taos, N.M., is having his fifth annual Oklahoma City solo show. I’ve admired Tyler’s work for a few years now and this week interviewed him by phone for the first time. I wanted to meet him in person, and he proved very genteel and affable. Plus, seeing his work in person is always a treat. His landscapes and wildlife paintings are so colorful and soothing; I love the Impressionistic use of light and color.
We also stopped a few doors down at In Your Eye Studio & Gallery because I was interested to see Jeff Gardner’s hand-colored photographs in person. I had received an e-mail with an image of one of his works earlier in the week that piqued my curiosity. His landscapes, many of Western Oklahoma, are even more impressive in person. His use of color in the photographs appears carefully measured. And I noticed many of them already had been sold.
While I didn’t get to see much art, I was able to get a bit of an education in the Paseo. I decided tonight to continue my quest to find non-medical sleep aids to soothe my insomnia. I was able to duck briefly into the Art of Yoga Studio and Gallery, where I got advice on relaxation and breathing techniques and a list of classes.
I was able to put in more time and consideration in Craig’s Emporium. The boys stayed outside on the bench in front of the store while I ventured in to inquire about incense. I learned that French lavender and chamomile are among the scents that will help with relaxation and picked up a package of lavender incense. We’ll see how it goes.
Even if Saturday’s weather isn’t ideal, I still recommend checking out the Paseo Gallery Walk. Hours are noon to 6 p.m. in the arts district. If you need help finding it, go to www.thepaseo.com.
