Pastel exhibit to open on Paseo
Pastel artist Clive R. Tyler doesn’t simply set out to paint pretty Western landscapes. He also tries to capture the colors, light and life of the scenes he creates.
“I want to see that it just captures the whole feel of the experience. Like does it have that inner glow to it? Does it have that feeling that I was feeling when I was standing there? I think that’s like a truth; they’re truthful paintings,” Tyler said in a recent phone interview.
The Taos, N.M., artist is bringing about 20 of his new pastel paintings to his fifth annual solo exhibit at Adelante! Gallery in the Paseo Arts District. The opening receptions for Tyler’s “Western Landscapes” show are set for 6 to 10 tonight and noon to 6 p.m. Saturday during the Paseo Gallery Walk.
Several other exhibits are opening this weekend during the monthly art walk.
In January, Tyler was named one of Southwest Art Magazine’s top 10 artists to watch in 2009. He recently received his sixth award in three years from The Pastel Journal.
“He’s a wonderful artist, and we’re really lucky to have him show his work here in Oklahoma City,” said Adelante! owner Cynthia Wolf.
A self-described “modern-day Impressionist,” Tyler will attend the show’s opening events and teach plein air, or outdoor, pastel workshops Saturday-Monday and Wednesday-Thursday in the Oklahoma City area.
While he considers himself primarily a landscape painter, his works often feature wildlife that wander through while he’s painting, including bears, moose and bison.
“I like to paint outside because I’m a nature kind of guy and I love the wilderness,” he said. “I tend to see a lot of color. Even like on a gray day I can see lots of color.”
