What to do in Oklahoma on April 11

CLINTON – Hear up-and-coming country singer Jason Michael Carroll tonight when he brings his new “Growing Up Is Getting Old Tour” to the Lucky Star Clinton Casino, 101 N Indian Hospital Road. The show begins at 9 p.m., immediately following the SWOSU Rodeo.
Over the past two years, Carroll has notched a couple of big hits. His debut album, “Waitin’ in the Country,” shot straight to No. 1 and produced two Top 5 singles with “Alyssa Lies” and “Livin’ Our Love Song,” with the latter recently earning him a Gold Mastertone Certification. A gifted songwriter, he wrote or co-wrote five of the 11 tracks on the CD, including a collaboration with three-time Grammy Award Winner, Jewel, according to a news release.
With the April 28 release of his sophomore album, “Growing Up Is Getting Old,” Carroll is poised to take his career a big step forward. The first single, “Where I’m From,” has already rocketed to country’s Top 20 singles and is still heating up the charts.
Originally from Houston, Texas, Carroll moved to North Carolina as a child and joined a band as a teenager, making a name for himself playing honky-tonks in the Raleigh-Durham area. He was an unlikely candidate for the clubs, as he was not allowed to listen to secular music growing up in North Carolina. But through friends and, later at his job in a motor shop, Carroll immersed himself in country music and began paying his dues. He soon met Don Gehman (Hootie and the Blowfish, John Mellencamp), who would prove to be very instrumental in making Nashville take notice. Gehman has since produced both of his albums.
Carroll’s music aptly depicts him as country’s Gen-Y family man, reflecting his generation’s transition from party to parenthood, and the ability to fully express the joys inherent in both worlds and the tensions that can arise when moving from unencumbered freedom to the responsibilities of home and hearth.
“There have been many times when I’ve wanted to just hang out and party, but then responsibility kicks in,” says Carroll in the release. ”While I hate being away from my family when on tour, I honestly believe I’m doing what I was meant to do – entertain audiences to the best of my ability and try to provide a better life for my children.”
Landing opening spots on some of country’s biggest tours for Brooks & Dunn, Carrie Underwood, Martina McBride and Trace Adkins, Carroll has perfected his stage show, winning over thousands of fans across the country. It’s an opportunity he doesn’t take lightly, either.
“I try to make every show count, no matter how long we’re on stage – whether we’re opening or headlining,” says Carroll in the release. “My band and I try to do everything we can to make each and every concert the best show ever, and to live up to people’s expectations. That’s really important to me because I want to be doing this for a long, long time. I’m a lucky guy who’s just living my dream, one city at a time.”
