The Farrelly brothers and MGM hope to get Sean Penn, Jim Carrey and Benicio Del Toro to play Larry, Curly and Moe, according to Variety.com.
The studio has tapped Penn to play Larry, are negotiating with Carrey to take on Curly (and gain 40 pounds in the process), and tapping Del Toro to become Moe in a new film version of “The Three Stooges.”
Variety reports that the film will be a comedy rather than a biopic of Moe Howard, Larry Fine and Howard. The comedy will be built on the shenanigans the characters pulled off in the famed Columbia Pictures shorts.
Writer-directors Peter and Bobby Farrelly have worked more than a decade to pull together the project, according ot the trade publication. Production will begin in early fall for a release sometime in 2010.
