Juan Antonio Bayona to direct “Twilight” sequel “Eclipse”

Speculation has been swirling all week that Summit Entertainment was readying to pick a director for “Eclipse,” the third film in the franchise based on Stephenie Meyer’s mega-popular “Twilight” books. Candidates have ranged from actress/fledgling director Drew Barrymore to Paul Weitz, brother of Chris Weitz, who currently is working on the second sequel in the series, “New Moon.”
But Variety is reporting that Summit has picked Spanish director Juan Antonio Bayona to direct “Eclipse.” Bayona directed the well-received Spanish-language horror-thriller “The Orphanage,” which was produced by his mentor, Guillermo Del Toro.
The trade publication reported that Summit is expected to make the official announcement soon. “Eclipse” is set for June 30, 2010.
“New Moon,” the next film in the series, is due in theaters in November 2009; production is due to start soon.
