Live-blog: Oscars red carpet
Walk with me, dear readers, down the Oscars red carpet. (Associated Press photos)
I’m watching the Oscars from the recliner in my den while wearing comfy jeans, cuddly socks and a T-shirt representing my favorite Oscar-nominated film “Slumdog Millionaire.” But if you’re actually at the 81st Annual Academy Awards, the dress is a bit more formal.
So, here’s the BAM’s Blog live-blog of the Oscars red carpet:
7 p.m.: “Project Runway”‘s Tim Gunn and GMA’s Robin Roberts are running the show here on the official red carpet show, and they’re starting with right away with an impeccably dressed big star: Kate Winslet. Her dark blue dress, which has a long sparkly sash, and her old-school Hollywood glamour hair look perfect for tonight.
Josh Brolin and Diane Lane
7:02: Josh Brolin and Diane Lane make a lovely couple, and she also looks old-school glam, though she’s wearing the dreaded all black.
7:03: Amy Adams looks terrific in a long crimson column and a gorgeously gaudy necklace. Tim just asked her if it was fair for her to compete in the supporting actress category against Marisa Tomei as a stripper, when she played a nun befrocked in head to toe. He can be a pretty amusing guy.
7:05: White appears to be a trend in gowns. Sarah Jessica Parker, who did say that work is in progress on the script for the sequel to the “Sex in the City” film, is in a white gown with a puffy skirt. I prefer Taraji P. Henson’s form-fitting, off-the-shoulder white dress. She looks gorgeous and her excitement to be here is infectious.
7:07: OK, all my newfound respect for Tim Gunn just evaporated as he briefly snagged Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie to absolutely gush about how glorious a couple they are and how they elevate the whole red carpet. He looks great in a tux, and her black gown gets a sexy boost with the interesting and revealing neckline. But try to ease up on the sucking up, Tim.
7:09: Now, Tim is gushing over Valentino, though I will say that if you’re in fashion, that’s appropriate. He’s definitely earned the respect of fashion fans everywhere. He’s been dressing Oscar nominees for decades, and according to that little bit, he’s dressed seven Oscar best actresses. Wow.
7:11: I love it that Danny Boyle has brought the entire ensemble of “Slumdog” along with him to the red carpet. It must be a huge thriller for these kids to be here. I hope they enjoy it. I love Dev Patel and Freida Pinto, but I’m glad all of them are being recognized.
Mickey Rourke
7:12: Mickey Rourke looks appropriately funky in his white suit and black shiny pointy-toe shoes. He’s been talking a lot about his dog, Loki, who died just a few days ago. In his Golden Globe acceptance speech, he thanked his dogs for always being there for him.
7:14: The celebs are coming fast and furious now. Zac Efron and Vanessa Hudgens make a cute couple, and I really like her sparkly black gown with the white flowers to liven up the top. I love the banter from Robert Downey Jr. about his wife Susan Downey, who looks gorgeous in her perfectly draped red dress, about working for his spouse, who is producing his big release next year, “Sherlock Holmes.”
7:16: It’s good to see some shine on the red carpet, rather than an ocean of black gowns. Viola Davis looks elegant in gold, and I adore the long sparkly golden column Anne Hathaway is wearing. I’m not too sure about Miley Cyrus’ light colored dress with the aqua trim, sparkles and scalloped many-layered skirt. I think she could have pulled off something a bit more grownup.
7:20: The accountants carrying in the envelopes get their moments in the sun before he shifted to Meryl Streep and her daughter. Meryl is wearing a gray gown that is sort of oddly draped and doesn’t really show off her figure. I like her daughter’s brown column, though it could be a bit brighter. I noticed that Frank Langella also brought his daughter as his date. I think that’s so sweet.
7:21: Tim is gushing about Penelope Cruz’s vintage white and gold gown with the ruffles running down the skirt. It’s 60 years old, so it’s much older than she.
Richard Jenkins
7:23: Robin gives Richard Jenkins his long-overdue moment. He’s nominated for best actor for “The Visitor,” and it’s well-deserved. He isn’t sure if people will know his name now, but I certainly hope so.
7:24: Poor ET managing editor Jess Cagle just tried to interview Jack Black at the bar, and Jack isn’t taking it seriously at all. He just sort of joked his way through that, and I like him all the better for it.
7:25: Tim is now raving about Marisa Tomei’s dramatically pleated gray Versace gown, which only arrived this morning. It’s pretty striking, but I still say it could use more color.
7:26: Seth Rogen, Leslie Mann and Judd Apatow are hanging out at the bar. Jess just asked them if an earthquake hits the Kodak Theatre tonight, which celeb they would save. Seth answered Judd “because without him I would never work again.” Smart man. Judd: “I would save my wife Leslie but she wouldn’t need it because her dress is made entirely of indestructible materials. Funny guy.
7:28: It looks like that’s it for the red carpet. We’re getting ready for the big-time, folks. Stay tuned!
