AWFJ marks Valentine’s Day with Men, Women We Love Awards

To celebrate Valentine’s Day, the Alliance of Women Film Journalists, of which I’m a member, has announced the recipients of its second annual Men We Love Awards.
The goal of the awards is to “honor men who’ve consistently and generously supported AWFJ during the past year, as well as men who’ve shown extraordinary support for women who are working in the film industry.”
Among this year’s winners are filmmaker Rod Lurie, “for consistently writing and directing films with smart, complex and inspiring female leads, including 2008′s stirring ‘Nothing But The Truth’” (which I still haven’t gotten to see since the film’s distributor, Yari Film Group, went bankrupt) and Andy Ostrow, widower of murdered actress/writer/director Adrienne Shelly (“Waitress”), who founded the Adrienne Shelly Foundation, a non-profit organization established in his late wife’s honor to help young women pursue filmmaking careers.

The AWFJ also started this year the Women We Love Awards as a companion to the Men We Love Awards. The Women We Love Awards go to “female characters with character who gave us our most memorable laughs, joys, insights and inspirations during 2008, and have shown in films – both lighthearted and dark – that they’re made of the right stuff not the wrong fluff.” Among the winners are Christine Collins (played by Angelina Jolie) of “Changeling,” Queenie (Taraji P. Henson) of “The Curious Case of Benjamin Button, Ray and Lila (Melissa Leo and Misty Upham) of “Frozen River” and EVE (voiced by Elissa Knight) of “WALL-E.”
