Many Oklahomans among tonight’s Grammy nominees

From country and rock to gospel and blues, Oklahomans from across the musical spectrum are among the nominees for the 2009 Grammy Awards.
The 51st Annual Grammy Awards will air live from 7 to 10:30 tonight from the Staples Center in Los Angeles on CBS.
As usual, several Oklahomans are nominated in the country categories. Trisha Yearwood, who lives in Owasso, earned three nominations: best country album for “Heaven, Heartache and the Power of Love”; country collaboration with vocals for the duet “Let the Wind Chase You” with Keith Urban; and female country vocal performance for “This Is Me You’re Talking To.”
Carrie Underwood, who grew up Checotah, also is nominated for female country vocal performance for her hit “Last Name.”
Oklahoma City-bred Grammy favorite Vince Gill is nominated along with Brad Paisley, Steve Wariner and others for best country instrumental performance for “Cluster Pluck,” off Paisley’s album “Play.”
In the best country performance by a duo or group with vocals category, two Oklahomans are represented. Brooks & Dunn, which includes Tulsa-raised Ronnie Dunn, is nominated for “God Must Be Busy,” and Rascal Flatts, which features Joe Don Rooney of Picher, for “Every Day.”
Alternative rockers Kings of Leon, which includes Oklahoma City natives Nathan and Matthew Followill, are in the running for three Grammys: Their CD “Only by the Night” is nominated for best rock album, while their track “Sex on Fire” is nominated for best rock song and rock performance by a duo or group with vocals.
Christian band MercyMe, which was founded in Oklahoma City, member Jim Bryson’s hometown, is nominated in the best gospel song category (along with co-writer Steven Curtis Chapman) for “You Reign.”
Tulsa-raised guitarist Elvin Bishop earned a best traditional blues album nomination for “The Blues Rolls On.”
Tom Paxton, a Bristow High School and University of Oklahoma graduate, is competing in the best traditional folk album category with his “Comedians & Angels.”
New Orleans rapper Lil Wayne received a leading eight nominations.
