Original soundtrack, “Slumdog Millionaire” (Interscope)

Indian composer A.R. Rahman fuses Bollywood’s bounce, techno’s rhythmic urgency and hip-hop’s bravado into an exhilarating soundtrack that pairs perfectly with Danny Boyle’s captivating “Slumdog Millionaire.”

Rahman worked with several artists on the soundtrack, but his collaborations with hip-hop standout M.I.A. not only produce unforgettable music but also help moviegoers get to know the characters. Her surprise hit “Paper Planes” is such an uncanny fit it seems made for the movie, and the remixed version pulses with funky energy.

Opening track “O…Saya,” which features the rapper, proves one of the most effective on the album, instantly transporting listeners to the slums of Mumbai.

The soundtrack includes a matched pair of pretty love songs, “Latika’s Theme” and “Dreams on Fire.” And you don’t have to speak the language to feel the love and joy in “Jai Ho,” the track for the movie’s closing Bollywood-style dance sequence.

Pleasingly diverse and unpredictable, the score recently won Rahman a Golden Globe, and he deserves to be remembered at Oscar time. The soundtrack was nominated Thursday for three Oscars: for best original score and best original song for “O…Saya” and “Jai Ho.”
