Character actor Pat Hingle, best known for playing Commissioner Gordon in the 1980s and ’90s Batman movies, has died after battling blood cancer. He was 84.

Hingle died at his home in Carolina Beach shortly after 10 p.m. Saturday, the Associated Press reported Monday, citing family friend Michele Seidman. Hingle had lived in the coastal town for more than 15 years, settling there after shooting the film “Maximum Overdrive” in the vicinity in 1986.

The AP also cited a family spokeswoman, Lynn Heritage, who says Hingle was diagnosed with myelodysplasia in November 2006.

Hingle’s career in movies and television spanned more than 50 years; according to IMDB, his first role was an uncredited part in 1954′s “On the Waterfront.” His last movie was the Will Ferrell comedy “Talladega Nights: The Ballad of Ricky Bobby,” released in 2006.

He and Michael Gough, who played Alfred, were the only actors to appear in all four of the 1980s and ’90s Batman films: “Batman” (1989), “Batman Returns” (1992), “Batman Forever” (1995)” and “Batman & Robin” (1997).

He also was nominated for a Tony Award in 1958 for best supporting or featured actor (dramatic) for “The Dark at the Top of the Stairs.”

According to IMDB, Hingle lived in North Carolina with his wife Julia, and he also had three children from a previous marriage. Our thoughts go out to Hingle’s family, friends and fans.
