Smash Mouth to perform at BCS National Championship
The Orange Bowl Committee has selected an appropriately named band to perform prior to the Jan. 8 FedEx BCS National Championship game in Miami.
The committee announced today that pop/rock band Smash Mouth will headline the Budweiser National Championship Tailgate Party presented by Allstate. The event, which begins at 11:30 a.m. Jan. 8, will take place in the northwest bus parking lot at Dolphin Stadium. Tailgate Party tickets are $20 ($15 with “The PATCH,” which can be purchased at www.orangebowl.org) and are available to residents and visitors alike. As the new release says, it’s a great way to catch National Championship football fever – even for those who don’t have tickets to the big game (assuming those ticket-less fans like “All Star” and the band’s cover of “I’m a Believer.”)
Of course, the BSC National Championship game is of particular interest in these parts and in the McDonnell household, though for completely different reasons. The game will pit the University of Oklahoma Sooners against the University of Florida Gators. Since I grew up in and live in Oklahoma, naturally, there are many, many, many Sooner fans just feverish with excitement.
We’re not among them: My husband, Patrick, attended U of F his freshman and sophomore years. Most of his extended family lives in Florida near Gainsville, and several of his relatives have graduated Gator proud. We bleed orange and blue (along with the orange and black of our alma mater, Oklahoma State University), so we’re rooting for the Gators all the way. Sorry, Sooner fans (including my mom).
More than 14,000 fans are expected to join the tailgate party prior to the kickoff of the 2009 FedEx BCS National Championship, where Smash Mouth will be the headliner.
Fans also will be entertained by the Miami Heat Street Band, an adrenaline-filled performance by Extreme Syndicate, a group of X-Games, Gravity Games and Dew Action Sports Tour all-star athletes, Ferris wheel, rock wall, mechanical bull, interactive games and contests, and much more, all geared to build excitement for the game that follows.
The Orange Bowl Committee also announced that Grammy- and Dove-winning gospel music singer and radio show host Yolanda Adams will perform the National Anthem prior to kick-off of the 2009 FedEx BCS National Championship game.
On Jan. 7, the day before the game, the committee will host what could be billed as the bowl season’s largest pep rally at Bicentennial Park in Miami. The National Championship Fan Fest presented by the City of Miami will be an unforgettable day of music and family fun from 3 p.m. until 9 p.m., featuring national acts along with local entertainers and deejays.
