“Slumdog Millionaire”

The Alliance of Women Film Journalists, of which I am a member, has announced the winners of its 2008 EDA (Excellent Dynamic Activism) Awards.

The organization divides its awards into three parts, and a summary of a few of the winners in each division is listed below.

EDA ANNUAL ACHIEVEMENT AWARDS

“Slumdog Millionaire” emerged a big winner, earning best film honors and the best direction award for Danny Boyle. (”Slumdog” is my personal favorite so far this year, and I will have an interview with Danny Boyle and my review of it on Friday. So watch for that.)

The voting resulted in a tie for best actress with Kate Winslet of “Revolutionary Road” and “The Reader” sharing honors with Sally Hawkins of “Happy-Go-Lucky.”

Viola Davis was named best actress in a supporting role for her work in “Doubt.”

Sean Penn won best actor for his portrayal of Harvey Milk in the biopic “Milk”; the late Heath Ledger was named best supporting actor for his unhinged turn as The Joker in “The Dark Knight.”

EDA FEMALE FOCUS AWARDS

“Frozen River” took home three of these awards: best female director for Courtney Hunt, best newcomer for Misty Upham and the Hanging in There Award for Persistence for Melissa Leo.

Along with sharing best actress honors, Hawkins also won the AWFJ’s breakthrough performance award.

Catherine Deneuve of the French film “A Christmas Tale” won the title of Actress Defying Age and Ageism and the Lifetime Achievement Award.

EDA SPECIAL MENTION AWARDS

“Slumdog Millionaire” won the Cultural Crossover Award, Mickey Rourke of “The Wrestler” won the Bravest Performance Award, and “27 Dresses” won the AWFJ’s Hall of Shame Award.

The Sequel That Shouldn’t Have Been Made Award was a tie between “Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull” and “Saw V.” “The Women” won The Remake That Shouldn’t Have Been Made Award.
