Hugh Jackman to host the Oscars

Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences announced today that actor Hugh Jackman will host the Oscars on Feb. 22.
Jackman, star of the “X-Men” films (including the 2009 prequel “X-Men Origins: Wolverine”) and People’s latest “Sexiest Man Alive,” earned an Emmy for hosting the 58th annual Tony Awards in 2004.
The actor will represent a change a pace from the comics and TV hosts typically tapped to host the awards show. Jon Stewart hosted the awards two of the past three years.
The Oscars are coming off a record-low ratings year, according to The Hollywood Reporter, so a shakeup certainly seems to be in order.
Besides being quite easy on the eyes, Jackman manages to come across as a good-natured bloke, and we’ll see how good he is at laughing at himself. His epic “Australia” is one of the fall’s box-office and critical disappointments. (Though I liked it, despite its butt-numbing nearly three-hour length.)
