Sounds of Christmas abound
State stars help accent cool holiday CDs

Whether you prefer hearing familiar old chestnuts or discovering new holiday favorites, options abound this Christmas season for music buyers, no matter what their favorite genre.

Broken Arrow native Kristin Chenoweth’s crystalline soprano adds sparkle to the classics on “A Lovely Way to Spend Christmas.”

The King may be dead but he can heard singing along with the likes of Amy Grant, LeAnn Rimes and Oklahoman Carrie Underwood on “Elvis Presley Christmas Duets.” On “Caroling, Caroling Christmas with Natalie Cole,” the songbird does another duet with her father, the late Nat King Cole, this time on “The Christmas Song.”

“I’ll Be Home for Christmas,” R&B singer Brian McKnight’s holiday offering, includes duets with his sons, Josh Groban and Oklahoma native Vince Gill. And Tony Bennett gets into “A Swingin’ Christmas” with the help of the Count Basie Big Band.

On “Christmas Spirit,” Tex-Mex rockers Los Lonely Boys give the holidays a bluesy groove, while Collin Raye infuses “A Family Christmas” with country warmth.

Alice Cooper, Dave Grohl and Lemmy Kilmister are among the contributors on “We Wish You a Metal Xmas and a Headbanging New Year.” Hollywood Records’ “All Wrapped Up!” features the Jonas Brothers, Miley Cyrus and Plain White T’s.

Mannheim Steamroller goes to “Christmasville” this year, while another holiday favorite, Harry Connick Jr., celebrates “What a Night! A Christmas Album.”

Singer-songwriter Neil Sedaka penned 12 new songs and crooned 10 seasonal standards for “The Miracle of Christmas” two-CD deluxe edition. Irish singer Enya also co-wrote most of “And Winter Came …,” her latest ethereal album.

Sheryl Crow penned an original song for her Hallmark exclusive album “Home for Christmas.” And R&B songstress Ledisi mingles old and new on “It’s Christmas.”

Banjo master Bela Fleck & the Flecktones deliver diversity on “Jingle All the Way,” which runs the gamut from Tchaikovsky to Tuvan throat singing.

A mix of the fantastical, melancholy and trippy makes up the soundtrack to “Christmas on Mars,” the long-awaited film from Oklahoma City’s The Flaming Lips.
