Kevin Costner says his music “sounds like Oklahoma”
Film actor/director Kevin Costner and his band Modern West released last week their debut album “Untold Truths,” and recently performed at the Grand Ole Opry.
The Oscar winner co-wrote half of the 12 songs on the album, which is steeped in roots-rock with elements of country, according to the Associated Press.
“I grew up with Motown because I was born in Compton (Calif.), but every time I do a song, it sounds like something in Oklahoma,” he told the AP.
Costner learned the piano and sang in a church choir as a child; he has been writing and performing with a group for about 20 years. He said his wife convinced him to pursue music more seriously, though he never planned on recording an album.
“I never intended to make a record,” he said. “I just wanted to play live again, but I wanted to do original material. People heard the songs and approached us about it.”
He old the AP he plans to keep making movies and wants to direct more, but music provides a vital outlet for him.
“This is as close to my personality as I ever get, playing live,” Costner said. “When I’m making a movie, I’m playing whoever I’m playing. But my personality comes out on stage when I play live. That’s when you see me the clearest.”
