Summit looking to make “Twilight” a franchise
Anticipating a big hit with “Twilight,” the film adaptation of the first book in Stephenie Meyer’s wildly successful vampire-romance saga, Summit Entertainment has moved the other three books in the series into the development pipeline.
According to The Hollywood Reporter, the film studio has acquired the rights to the next three novels in the series: “New Moon,” “Eclipse” and “Breaking Dawn.”
Summit has hired “Twilight” screenwriter Melissa Rosenberg to pen scripts based on “New Moon” and “Eclipse,” according to the trade magazine. The fourth book, “Breaking Dawn,” doesn’t have a writer attached at this time.
The series follows the rocky but passionate romance between Bella Swan, the new kid in the small, cloudy town of Forks, Wash., and an incredibly beautiful “vegetarian” vampire named Edward, whose coven only drinks the blood of animals.
“Twilight” opens in theaters Friday, and it seems guaranteed to be a big hit, considering the saga’s fervent fan base, particularly among women and particularly among females in the tween, teen and 20-something age ranges.
I got the chance to interview Meyer, most of the film’s cast (yes, ladies, including Robert Pattinson, who plays Edward), director Catherine Hardwicke and Rosenberg at last week’s “Twilight” film junket in Los Angeles. I’ll be bringing you bits and pieces of these interviews throughout the week, which I have declared “Twilight” Week here at BAM’s Blog.
Among the topics discussed in the interviews were the possibilities and challenges of adapting the “Twilight” sequels to the big screen.
