“Twilight” star’s appearance leads to near frenzy
Hormones were apparently a-raging Monday at a mall in San Francisco, when an estimated 3,000 teenagers mobbed an autograph-signing session with Robert Pattinson, the 22-year-old heartthrob of the hotly anticipated film “Twilight.”
According to IMDB,police were called to Stonestown Galleria because the crowd grew so large that some teens were being crushed against the mall windows. Ouch.
The autograph session was scheduled to start at 6 p.m. at the Hot Topic store, but a large crowd started gathering before the store even opened Monday morning. The event, which some teens traveled hundreds of miles to attend, had to be canceled.
The IMDB report says that an estimated 300 people were expected to attend. That estimate was obviously made by someone who had no idea how big the “Twilight” book series really is, especially among young ladies.
The movie adaptation of the first book in Stephenie Meyer’s vampire romance saga is expected to be a huge blockbuster when it opens Nov. 21.
I attended the film junket for “Twilight” over the weekend in Los Angeles, and interviewed much of the cast, along with Meyer and director Catherine Hardwicke.
If I survive CMA Awards Week – I promise not to keel over until after the awards show, but I make no further guarantees – I will start looking ahead to “Twilight” Week here at the blog.
And for all those young fans out there reading: Yes, I got to interview Pattinson at the junket, and yes, he is quite cute up close.
