Rascal Flatts closes 2008 touring with 1.2 million fans in attendance

Top vocal group Rascal Flatts, which includes guitarist Joe Don Rooney of Picher, wrapped its 2008 touring this last Sunday. The country mega-stars ended the year with 1.2 million fans in attendance at 70 shows, according to a news release.

That tally includes a sold-out September show at Tulsa’s new BOK Center; the Tulsa concert served as a grand homecoming for Rooney.

In January, the band will launch the final leg of its “Bob That Head Tour” for a run of 25 shows with Epic/Columbia Nashville’s Jessica Simpson opening.

Rascal Flatts’ “Greatest Hits Volume 1″ debuted with sales near 90,000 as of Tuesday, bringing the trio’s total album sales for the year to 981,000, according to the release. The band also has sold an additional 2.6 million in digital track sales.

“Greatest Hits Volume 1,” released Oct. 28, is a two-disc package that includes 13 top singles as well as three newly recorded Christmas songs as bonus tracks: the holiday classic “White Christmas,” the chestnut ”Jingle Bell Rock” and an a capella version of “I’ll Be Home For Christmas.”

Rascal Flatts has sold more than 17 million albums, scored 9 No. 1 singles and 17 top 10 hits, and each of their five albums are multi-platinum sellers. In May the trio was honored as the 2008 Academy of Country Music/The Home Depot Humanitarian Award recipient due to its dedication to raising funds for the Monroe Carell Jr. Children’s Hospital at Vanderbilt, where as well as its work on the American Red Cross Celebrity Cabinet board and the Make-A-Wish Foundation.

The band also is nominated for for vocal group of the year, a prize the trio has won for six straight years, at the CMA Awards, which will air Wednesday from Nashville on ABC.
