Actress Famke Janssen, a United Nations Goodwill Ambassador, will headline today’s celebration of United Nations Day at the University of Oklahoma. Janssen, who is perhaps best known for her roles as Dr. Jean Gray/Phoenix in the “X-Men” film trilogy and as a Bond girl in “GoldenEye,” volunteers for the U.N. as a Goodwill Ambassador.
Janssen also plays the mother of a stolen child in a new film, “Taken,” coming out later this fall and co-starring Academy Award nominee Liam Neeson.
“Famke Janssen’s work raising awareness about a critical global problem makes her a role model,” said Robert Cox, a professor and the director of the OU School of International and Area Studies, in a news release.
Cox, who also is the chair of the U.N. Association of the United States of America of Oklahoma City, added, “It is wonderful that Famke Janssen uses her notoriety and fluency in four languages to educate people around the world about the seriousness of trafficking in human beings.”
Janssen was awarded the Special Jury Best Actress Award at the 2007 Hamptons International Film Festival for her role as a pool hustler in the film “Turn the River.” Born in the Netherlands, Janssen speaks Dutch, English, German and French. She is a graduate of Columbia University, where she majored in literature.
She will join Thomas Huston Orr, director of OU’s School of Drama, for a free, public discussion about acting at 3 p.m. today in the Beaird Lounge of Oklahoma Memorial Union, 900 Asp Ave.
The United Nations Association of Oklahoma City also will host a luncheon discussion with Janssen, Messitte and Irvine on Saturday at the Faculty House in Oklahoma City. For more information or tickets, call 478-0358.
For more information on any of the events or for accommodations on the basis of disability, call the International Programs Center at 325-1396.
