According to an Associated Press story posted today at CNN.com, actor Terrence Howard said he was surprise to learn that Don Cheadle would take over his role as James Rhodes in “Iron Man 2.”

“It was the surprise of a lifetime,” the actor and musician told National Public Radio on Tuesday, according to the AP story. “There was no explanation, (the contract) just up and vanished.”

Howard said he read the news reports that the main issue for the change was money; he also said the contracts he signs apparently “aren’t worth the paper that they’re printed on sometimes.”

Rhodes isn’t just Tony Stark/Iron Man’s (the terrific Robert Downey Jr., who will be back for the sequel) best buddy. In the comics, he joined Stark as fellow armor-clad hero War Machine.

It appears that Cheadle now will get the honor of donning the silvery suit, while Howard works on his not-so-heroic vanishing act.

Howard, who also starred in the movie “Hustle & Flow,” was promoting his new album “Shine Through It” on NPR.

It’s just another weird and unsettling occurrence in the making of the “Iron Man” sequel, which is really starting to get a negative vibe in my mind.
