Rascal Flatts builds playground as humanitarian project
Rascal Flatts members Gary LeVox, Jay DeMarcus and Joe Don Rooney (who hails from Picher) teamed up with volunteers from the Home Depot, Academy of Country Music and KaBOOM! in Birmingham, Ala., Wednesday to build a playground in just one day for the 225 students at Princeton Alternative Elementary School.
The playground’s design was based on drawings by children who attend the school. Princeton Alternative Elementary School focuses on fostering responsible, productive and self-motivated communicators as lifelong learners.
Rascal Flatts, a popular country music trio, was the 2008 recipient of the Home Depot Humanitarian Award at the 43rd Annual Academy of Country Music Awards in May. The award recognizes country music artists who serve others, have a generous spirit and help build the dreams of those in need.
In addition to recognition at the awards show, Humanitarian Award recipients are honored with a KaBOOM! playground donated by the Home Depot built in the city of the artist’s choice. Rascal Flatts selected Birmingham for their playground build.
