Actor Bill Murray wants to see the new generation of Ghostbusters include a woman, according to IMDB.
Murray played Dr. Peter Venkman in the hit 1984 sci-fi comedy and the 1989 sequel. He is reportedly interested in reprising his role in the planned third film, calling it “a great idea.”
Lee Eisenberg and Gene Stupnitsky, writers on the U.S. version of the TV series “The Office,” have been hired to pen the third installment. It’s been speculated that the new film would team Murray, Dan Aykroyd, Harold Ramis and Ernie Hudson, who played the four original Ghostbusters, with a new squad played by Seth Rogen, Steve Carell, Paul Rudd and Chris Rock.
But Murray told MTV.com, “I think it’d be funny to have a girl Ghostbuster. We don’t have a girl Ghostbuster. I mean, they say like, ‘What if you passed it to Chris Rock?’ And I go, ‘Well, I dunno. Is Chris Rock gonna save us?’ You know, I guess. He’s funny.”
He adds, “I just think there’s some funny girls I’d love to see be Ghostbusters.”
If we are going to have a third movie with a new team, I tend to agree with Murray. There are plenty of funny women who could play Ghostbusters, including TV land’s current golden girl, Tina Fey. Elizabeth Banks also would be a good choice considering the other fellow members of the Judd Apatow crowd on the speculative list.
Murray stars as the corrupt but popular mayor in the new family film “City of Ember,” opening Friday. Check out the blog then to see my review of the film.
