Former Hootie & the Blowfish frontman Darius Rucker has joined the ranks of pop stars Jewel and Jessica Simpson by making the switch this year to country music.
The move has paid off in a big way for the South Carolina-raised singer-songwriter who scored such ’90s hits as “Hold My Hand,” “Let Her Cry” and “Only Wanna Be with You.”
Rucker’s debut country CD, “Learn to Live,” is currently sitting atop Billboard’s Top Country Albums chart. The album’s lead-off single, “Don’t Think I Don’t Think About It,” which also happens to be one of the best songs on the album,” is No. 1 on Billboard’s Hot Country Songs list.
I’ll be bringing you a review of “Learn to Live” in the coming days. And Rucker will perform tonight on “The Late Show with David Letterman,” which airs at 10:30 on CBS (KWTV-9 here in Oklahoma City).
But first, let’s play a game of compare-contrast on this week’s Video Spotlight.
My colleague George Lang - who is a good guy but probably one of those people who samples a new food and then utters the words, ‘This is disgusting; here, you taste it” – helped unearth a carefully buried memory of Rucker’s real first country music foray.
In 2005, Rucker donned a flashy country outfit and sang in a Burger King commercial based on the old-timey song “Big Rock Candy Mountain” while Brooke Burke cavorted in a cowgirl outfit. The results are not nearly as pretty on the ears as Burke is to a man’s eyes, not because Rucker’s baritone is lacking but because the whole thing is covered in more cheese than anything on the Burger King menu.
Contrast that advertising debacle with the video for “Don’t Think I Don’t Think About It,” which is far better in every way.
And keep an eye out for my review of “Learn to Live.”
