Friday Featured Track

Pick your favorite version of the song that has been on my brain the most this week:

- “Life Is a Highway,” by Tom Cochrane, from the 1992 album “Mad Mad World.”

OR

- “Life Is a Highway,” cover by Rascal Flatts, from the soundtrack to the 2006 Pixar movie “Cars.”

Both versions of this song have been cycling through my head all week, mostly because it’s so hooky and catchy regardless of which rendition you prefer.

Canadian singer-songwriter Tom Cochrane penned and first recorded this peppy road tune, scoring a hit in his homeland and in the United States back in 1991-92. Back during my high school days, this song was ubiquitous, and my friends and I sang along with gleeful abandon, as teenage girls are wont to do. (We sang along even if the lyrics were a bit hazy to us. Surprisingly, the line “Tell ‘em we’re survivors” sounds quite a bit different with a Canadian accent.)

Believe it or not, my preoccupation with the Rascal Flatts’ equally effervescent cover has less to do with my recent toddler-induced Pixar obsession (As I’ve reported before, my almost 22-month-old son, Gabe the Babe, loves “Toy Story” and its sequel; the rest of us love trying to get him to watch any animated movie that doesn’t star Woody and Buzz.) and more to do with the sheer entertainment value of the song.

Plus, I’ve had the superstar country band, which includes guitarist Joe Don Rooney of Picher, on the brain since the trio will be coming Thursday to the BOK Center in Tulsa. My excitement is steadily building, because I think it’s going to be a great show.

Few tickets, mostly just single seats, are left for the show. For information, go to www.bokcenter.com.

And rest assured that as I make the trip up Interstate 44 to Tulsa, I’ll be singing:

Life is a highway

I want to ride it all night long

Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah

If you’re going my way

I want to drive it all night long …
