Big week for Oklahoma country music fans
Oklahoma country music fans have lots of shows and stars to choose from over the next week.
A long line of great country shows starts tonight at the Oklahoma State Fair with Miranda Lambert, who will follow two hours of PRCA Xtreme bullriding action at “Beauty & the Bulls.” The bullriding starts at 7:30 in the Jim Norick State Fair Arena, with Lambert’s performance coming after the cowboys have had enough.
The rodeo-and-country-music combos at the fair continue with the annual PRCA Rodeo starting at 7:30 p.m. Saturday, followed by a concert from Joe Nichols. (I’ll have more on Nichols Saturday in The Oklahoman, on NewsOK and on BAM’s Blog.) On Sunday, the rodeo action starts at 4 p.m., and Neal McCoy will perform after.

Also, Texas-Oklahoma band Cross Canadian Ragweed will host its fifth annual Family Jam at the Zoo Amphitheatre. Along with Ragweed, the sold-out show will feature Lee Ann Womack, Stoney LaRue and the Arsenals, Mike McClure Band and others including, surprisingly, hard rockers Buckcherry. Gates open at 1:30 p.m. Saturday; music starts at 3.
On Thursday, star trio Rascal Flatts, which includes Joe Don Rooney of Picher, will play at 8 p.m. at Tulsa’s BOK Center. Young hitmaker Taylor Swift is a special guest on the band’s “Bob That Head” Tour. Few tickets remain for the show.

The great lineup continues next Friday, Sept. 26, with influential Texas singer-songwriter Robert Earl Keen playing at 8 p.m. Friday at Riverwind Casino. The Norman casino also will have legendary country crooner Charley Pride playing at 8 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 27.

Of course, today’s big news was the announcement that bluegrass/country songbird Alison Krauss and former Led Zeppelin frontman Robert Plant, who collaborated on the fantastic 2007 album “Raising Sand,” will play a concert next Friday, Sept. 26, at the Zoo Amphitheatre. The video to “Gone Gone Gone,” a single from the album, which defies genre classification, won a CMT Music Award back in April.
“Raising Sand” also won album of the year and Krauss and Plant won duo of the year at Thursday’s Americana Honors & Awards in Nashville, Tenn.
The duo’s Oklahoma City show, which was originally supposed to take place in Houston, will be a benefit for Hurricane Ike relief efforts. Information on it should be posted soon at www.zooamp.com.
As fall rolls on, more big country shows will becoming to the state, bringing stars like Checotah’s Carrie Underwood, Montgomery Gentry, Crystal Gayle and the Eagles (Hey, they’re nominated for CMA’s vocal group of the year.)
Also, the Wormy Dog Saloon and Tumbleweed in Stillwater are keeping busy with plenty of up-and-coming artists and local and regional talents on their schedules.
So, if you love country music, now’s the time to take in a show.
