Toy Story 2

Today’s featured track:

- “When She Loved Me,” by Sarah McLachlan, from the soundtrack to the 1999 movie “Toy Story 2.”

My younger son Gabe the Babe, now 21 months, has entered the stage of toddlerhood in which he now understands the concept of movies. He also has figured out that he can use a combination of Mom/Dad/Big Brother and the remote to control what movie appears on the TV. And like most children in the 2-year-old range, he has his favorites films and insists on watching them constantly.

For Gabe, the adventures of Buzz Lightyear and Sheriff Woody (whom he calls ‘oody) are infinitely fascinating. Thankfully, the geniuses at Pixar made two “Toy Story” movies, so the rest of us aren’t forced to watch the same movie over and over. Well, we are, but at least we can alternate between the two Pixar tales. (Needless to say, we’re really hoping “Toy Story 3″ is on track in every way.)

“When She Loved Me” is used in “Toy Story 2″ to tell the heartbreaking story of Jessie the Yodeling Cowgirl, a doll who is loved and then abandoned by her owner. Randy Newman, Pixar’s favorite music man, penned the poignant lyrics, and McLachlan’s high, pure voice perfectly captures the sorrow of the song.

I have to struggle not to cry every time I hear this song. And these days I’m hearing it a lot.
