The trouble with Heath Ledger’s last role
The Hollywood Reporter has an insightful story online about the difficulties in finding a domestic distributor for Heath Ledger’s final film role.
Ledger took on the starring role in Terry Gilliam’s fantasy “The Imaginarium of Doctor Parnassus,” which involves a traveling theater troupe, the devil and an immortal doctor. The actor died in January before he completed filming on the movie, but A-listers Johnny Depp, Colin Farrell and Jude Law stepped in to share his role, which Gilliam altered to incorporate shape-shifting.
The trio also decided to donate their earnings from the movie to Ledger’s young daughter.
But Gilliam hasn’t notched a box office hit in more than a decade, so Hollywood dealmakers are reluctant to bank on the film, even with the cache of it including Ledger’s last role.
