Tacky or morbid – you be the judge
When I opened my inbox this morning, I found about a dozen Sunday e-mails from a PR hack sharing a photo from IsaacHayes.com. The writer called the photo “as eerie as the time I read a newspaper obituary on its own obituary writer.” (That doesn’t really sound all that spooky to me.)
As you can see, the photo depicts Bernie Mac, who died Saturday; Isaac Hayes, who died Sunday; and Samuel L. Jackson, who as far as we know is still alive and kicking. It appears to be a publicity shot from the upcoming movie ”Soul Men,” due for November release.
The gist of the photo and e-mail was essentially this: “Yesterday, it was Bernie Mac. Today it was Isaac Hayes. Could Samuel Jackson be next?”
Sheesh. I’ve often heard that old superstition about celebrity deaths coming in threes, but this is ridiculous. This e-mail really comes across as tacky and morbid, even if the guy did at least refrain from giving Vegas odds on Jackson’s demise.
Still, there’s a tiny superstitious part of me that wants to encourage Sam the Coolness to eat lots of leafy green veggies and drive under the speed limit for the next few weeks.
