Melissa Leo traverses “Frozen River”
Melissa Leo in “Frozen River.” (Sony Pictures Classics)
Through the Alliance of Women Film Journalists, I was given the opportunity to do an exclusive interview with Melissa Leo, star of the film “Frozen River,” which opens today in limited release.
The film, which won the Grand Jury Prize at this year’s Sundance Film Festival, stars Leo (TV’s “Homicide: Life on the Streets,” “21 Grams”) as Ray Eddy, an upstate New Yorker whose gambling-addicted husband abandons her and their two sons a week before Christmas. She meets a kindred spirit in Lila (Misty Upham), a Mohawk Indian woman who is also a struggling mother.
Desperate for money, the women get involved in the smuggling trade, ferrying illegal immigrants across the part of the U.S.-Canadian border within the boundaries of the Mohawk reservation.

You can also read exclusives interviews with the film’s director and editor at www.awfj.org.
“Frozen River” doesn’t have an Oklahoma City release date yet, but keep an eye out for this terrific independent drama.
