Batman bests Spider-Man’s record
In the battle of the superhero sequels, “The Dark Knight” emerged the as the box office victor.
“The Dark Knight” nabbed a record $155.34 million in its opening weekend, Dan Fellman, head of distribution for Warner Bros., told the Associated Press today.
The take for the “Batman Begins” sequel beat the previous debut-weekend record of $151.1 million, which “Spider-Man 3″ set in May 2007.
Fellman told the AP that he expects the darkly realistic Batman tale to fly past the $200 million mark by week’s end.
“We knew it would be big, but we never expected to dominate the marketplace like we did,” he told the AP.
“The Dark Knight” set another record on Friday, for the biggest opening-day take in history, another top mark it snatched from Spidey 3.
But Fellman said the Batman flick actually took in more money in its first day than previously thought. The new one-day record is $67.85 million, nearly $1.5 million than the studio previously estimated. (Spidey 3′s opening-day total was $59.8 million.)
However, the AP story notes that Spidey 3 may actually have sold more tickets than “The Dark Knight” because movie admission prices have gone up in the past year.
Regardless, the story notes that “The Dark Knight” cost $185 million to make, so it’s already on track to make big bucks for Warner Bros. And the buzz surrounding the late Heath Ledger’s powerhouse performance as the Joker continues to get louder, with much speculation that he will get a posthumous Oscar nomination.
The movie also broke the “Spider-Man 3″ record for best IMAX debut with $6.2 million. Spidey 3 grabbed $4.7 million in IMAX theaters its opening weekend.
