Mr. Spriggs BBQ: Funny or Die?

See more funny videos at Funny or Die

This afternoon, my colleague George Lang tipped me off that a commercial for a barbecue restaurant in my neck of the woods has been featured on www.funnyordie.com, the popular Will Ferrell-Adam McKay comedy Web site.

The soul-rrific jingle for Mr. Spriggs Barbeque, 1017 S Air Depot in Midwest City, has been viewed more than 35,300 times on the site. The 30-second spot features a soul crooner and his backup singers/servers praising the restaurant’s tender meat while folks chow down. It’s hilarious, and it makes you sort of hungry, so I supposed you would consider it effective advertising.

I live just down the road in Del City, and while Mr. Spriggs isn’t my favorite Mid-Del barbecue joint – that would be Spencer’s – the food there is pretty tasty.

But this ad must air really, really late at night because I’ve never seen it before.

For those that aren’t familiar with FunnyorDie.com, it was started by Ferrell and McKay’s production company, Gary Sanchez Productions, and developed by Randy Adams. Along with the original material created by the FOD team and user-submitted content, the site often gets videos from famed funnymen like Judd Apatow.

Users can vote on whether a video is “funny” and a keeper or whether it should “die” and be banished to the site’s crypt. At last look, Mr. Sprigg’s Barbeque’s musical ad had 733 “funny” votes vs. 421 “die” votes.

Not bad for a song about barbecue. Of course, in my opinion, we could use a few more songs about barbecue, especially ones as giggle-inducing as the Mr. Sprigg’s ditty.
