How do you say “dead” in Greek?
Legendary Pictures has confirmed that it is working on a follow-up to the 2006 swords-and-sandals flick “300″ for Warner Bros., Variety.com is reporting.
Frank Miller, who wrote the original graphic novel, will pen a graphic novel the second movie will be based on, according to the trade mag. Also, Zack Snyder, who helmed the first film, will be back in the director’s chair.
The Variety story says it’s not yet clear whether the movie will be a prequel or a spinoff.
It’s doubtful that the movie will be a traditional sequel, since, oh, I don’t know, almost all main the characters died in “300.” Even Gerard Butler’s sexy abs and occasional Scottish brogue couldn’t save King Leonidas and his men. But that’s what you get when you loosely base your graphic novel and movie on tragic Greek history and legend.
Legendary has made the follow-up a top priority, and Snyder’s mention of it at the recent Saturn Awards got all the fanboys pumped up. But the Variety story says Snyder won’t officially commit to the project until he sees what Miller cooks up for it.
Rumors about a sequel to the blockbuster have been bandied about since it opened to huge numbers, but duplicating that success will take a lot of creative thought and filmmaking.
As Variety points out, the brilliant minds behind the Oscar-winning “Gladiator” couldn’t figure out how to make a follow-up work without Maximus and Russell Crowe.
But creative and unlikely seem to be what Miller do best, so we shall see.
