5 questions for Jason Meadows
Emerging country music singer-songwriter Jason Meadows, who was raised in Calera, will play at 1:30 p.m. today at the Country Fever Music Festival near Pryor.
Meadows was the first runner-up on the third season of “Nashville Star.” His first video, “100% Cowboy,” was a hit on Country Music Television. His follow-up video, “18 Videotapes,” received a preliminary CMT Music Award nomination for Tear Jerker Video of the Year.
I had the chance to do an e-mail interview with Meadows this week before the festival. Here are his answers to my five questions:
1. Are you excited about sharing the bill at Country Fever with the likes of Willie Nelson, Trace Adkins, Dierks Bentley, Sugarland, etc.? Have any of the artists on the Country Fever bill been musical influences for you?
Are you kidding me? It’s a dream come true for this Okie to share a bill with Willie Nelson. I am a fan of all those guys on the bill that day. Willie has definitely been an influence for me. I grew up listening to Waylon and Willie. I hope I am still going strong like he is at his age. He is everyone’s hero!
2. How has your career taken off since “Nashville Star”? How did appearing on the show help not only your career but your development as an artist?
I think what it did right off the bat was give me a built in fan base. You can’t ever match the power of being on TV once a week for two months. It was like going to country music boot camp. We were thrown right into things that most people don’t get to do that early in the game and you either had to step up or get left behind.
3. Please tell me about your style of country music. And what can people expect from your live performances?
If you took Chris Ledoux,Garth Brooks, Hank Jr. , Waylon Jennings and AC/DC put ‘em in a bucket and mixed them up, Jason Meadows’ rodeo rock is what you’d come out with. All I can say is grab yourself a cold one and hold on tight, you are in for the ride of your life. We definitely have a big time and get everyone involved.
4. Are you living in Nashville now? Where is your farm? How often do you get back to Oklahoma to visit and perform? Is it especially exciting performing in your home state? Why?
I live about an hour outside of Nashville. Way out in where they grow country music! As often as I can. It’s always the greatest to come back to Oklahoma and play for everyone. This is where I am from and these are my people. I will always be an Okie!
5. You’ve had quite a bit of success, especially with your videos. Has it come faster than you expected? What’s next for you?
Yes, some of it has, but I am always working toward the next thing. We are always working on the live show, writing songs for the next record and thinking about the next video. Next for me is my new single “Farm Girl”. My fans have been after me to release this one and I am going to give them what they want. If I didn’t I’d have no business doing this. Country music is all about the fans. Without them we wouldn’t have a job would we?
