“Good Girl Art” subject of book

Be sure to check out nerd king Matt Price’s recent Word Balloons column about comics historian Ron Goulart’s latest book “Good Girl Art,” about the popularity of pretty and sexily attired female comics characters such as Vampirella and my personal fave, Sheena, Queen of the Jungle. (Never read the comic but loooved the Saturday morning cartoon growing up. When I was in elementary school, I had a tiger-striped bathing suit on hand just in case she ever needed an extra sidekick. I guess you could say I took my cartoon fantasies very seriously as a child.)

I’m now looking forward to reading the book, which Matt’s story says follows the history of female comics characters from their damsel in distress status of the 1940s to their heroics of today.

And in case you’re wondering, no, I’m neither shocked nor offended that men and male teens enjoy looking at attractive, seductively clad women in comic books. I’m the only women in a household that includes two sons - one a teenager - and my husband. I’m sort of familiar with the concept, and I think it will be interesting to read Goulart’s analysis.

Plus, after reading Matt’s story, I’ve decided to make “sedate sexiness” my personal style statement.

Thank you for not being shocked or offended. It has never made any sense to me why women get worked up over that sort of thing. I think the success of the “Sex and the City” series and movie proves they’re just as interested in looking at scantily clad attractive men. It’s hypocritical if you ask me.
