Checking out Free Comic Book Day
My family and I took my advice on Saturday evening and took in an “Iron Man”-Free Comic Book Day double feature.
After viewing “Iron Man” at the new Warren Theatre in Moore, we went a bit further south to Speeding Bullet Comics in Norman, where Matt Price of Nerdage fame is one of the co-owners. He was live-blogging the event as people came in to peruse the offerings.
Speeding Bullet was offering dozens of titles - from selections for all ages to those for mature readers - in the Ricochet Cafe section of the store.
Respecting the Gauntlet and limiting ourselves to five books each, we were able to pick up a wide array of entertainment. My husband, Patrick, focused on the Marvel and DC classics: titles featuring Superman, the Hulk, Iron Man, Spider-Man, X-Men and Batman.
Chris, 13, grabbed a Superman, a Bongo book featuring the Simpsons, The Moth, a manga sampler and a Transformers. He also bought a couple of packs of Transformers cards to add to his growing collection of cardboard cars, helicopters and jet planes.
I decided to try out the “Tomb Raider,” “Broken Trinity” and “Maximum Ride” freebies. But I was most excited to get the preview of the comic version of Dean Koontz’s “Frankenstein” series; I loved the first two paperbacks in the trilogy and eagerly await the third. The comic looks like a great visual retelling of this intriguing story.
We even got a trio of comics for Gabe the Babe, 17 months, who loves to sit with a book and pretend to read. He spent the car ride to a restaurant and then home babbling away in his car seat while clutching “Walt Disney’s Gyro Gearloose,” “Walt Disney’s Mickey Mouse” and “Tiny Titans.”
Since Marvel seems to have staked out the first weekend in May to open one of its superhero movies, it’s a good bet that the movie-Free Comic Book Day double feature will become a family tradition.
