Box office report

Tony Stark more than held his own this weekend against the rampaging Niko Bellic.

“Iron Man” made $98.6 million domestically in its first weekend, the Associated Press reported today. The domestic total is about $2 million less than distributor Paramount estimated Sunday, but still puts “Iron Man” in second-place behind the original “Spider-Man” on the list of best debuts among nonsequel movies.

Counting overseas receipts, “Iron Man” already has taken in $200 million worldwide, according to AP.

I think we can put to rest the idea that the great reviews and huge hype over the new video game “Grand Theft Auto IV,” which was released last Tuesday, had the potential to “kill” “Iron Man,” as some media-watchers predicted last week.

In fact, Marvel Studios announced today that “Iron Man 2″ will hit theaters April 30, 2010. (Oh, please let Terrence Howard have a chance to become War Machine.) That will add a dose of iron to its burgeoning slate of comic-book adaptations, which includes next month’s “The Incredible Hulk”; “Captain America,” slated on IMDB for 2009; “Thor” in summer 2010; “Nick Fury” in 2010; and “The Avengers” in summer 2011. Whew. That’s a whole lot of ‘plosions and costumed heroics coming our way. And there’s nothing wrong with that.

Here’s the complete box office rundown for the weekend:

1. “Iron Man,” Paramount, $98,618,668, 4,105 locations, $24,024 average, $102,118,668, one week.

Yeah, GTA really hurt Iron Man’s box office. I guess we can lay that theory to rest and admit that Heartbreak Kid bombed because it was a bomb.
