David Cook still in the “Idol” running

Tulsan still safe on ‘American Idol’
Oklahoman David Cook is continuing his quest to become the next “American Idol.”
Cook, 25, of Tulsa, was the second of the eight remaining finalists on the popular reality television series to be declared safe Thursday night. He performed “Innocent” by Canadian alternative rockers Our Lady of Peace on Tuesday’s show.
A native of Blue Springs, Mo., Cook has been a fixture for the past few years on Tulsa’s alternative music scene, performing in area clubs with the band the Midwest Kings and as a solo artist.
The singing contest’s weekly results show was delayed a night to make way for Wednesday’s charity special “Idol Gives Back.”
Thursday’s broadcast included highlights from the star-studded telethon, which featured 2005 “American Idol” winner Carrie Underwood of Checotah.
“American Idol” host Ryan Seacrest said Thursday that “Idol Gives Back” had raised more than $60 million so far.
During Thursday’s show, celebrities from Dr. Phil to Jim Carrey appeared in recorded pleas for more donations.
All three presidential candidates – Sens. Hillary Clinton, John McCain and Barack Obama – did the same.
Australia native Michael Johns, 29, of Los Angeles, was eliminated Thursday from “American Idol.”
