Friday Featured Track
The song that has been on my brain the most this week:
- “Happy Birthday,” Steppenwolf (from the 1969 album “At Your Birthday Party.”)
On Thursday, I got the call.
As reliably as Old Faithful, my dad called me on my 31st birthday to play this lovely, soulful song for me over the phone. He’s been playing it for me on my birthday since before I can even remember, making it even more a part of my turning one year older than cake, presents or Hallmark cards.
Even if the calendar reads April 3, it just isn’t my birthday until I hear John Kay crooning, “Happy birthday, sweet, sweet baby.”
This year, Dad had a special gift for me: A CD with this song and several other Steppenwolf tracks pulled from his old vinyl collection.
Happy birthday to all the April babies out there (including my birthday buddy, Sam, who turned 3 on Thursday). I highly recommend you play this for your sweet baby whenever his or her big day comes up on the calendar.

I love this song! It is one of Steppenwolfe’s totally underrated softer songs. The best of which is probably “Snowblind Friend”.
