Country music star Carrie Underwood will make her second appearance on “Saturday Night Live” this Saturday, on the late-night sketch program’s first new episode since the writers’ strike ended last week.

The Checotah product will be the episode’s musical guest, while former “SNL” writer and “Weekend Update” co-anchor Tina Fey will be the show’s host. Fey is now the writer, executive producer, creator and star of the NBC sitcom “30 Rock.”

Underwood last appeared on “SNL” on March 24, 2007, as musical guest in an episode hosted by NFL star quarterback Peyton Manning. At the time, she was only the fifth country performer to appear on the show in its more than three decade history. (Underwood’s idol and fellow Oklahoman Garth Brooks, Faith Hill, the Dixie Chicks and Keith Urban were her country music predecessors on the show.)

The “American Idol” winner’s “SNL” appearance coincides with the launch of her “Carnival Ride Tour” tonight in Wilkes-Barre, Pa., in support of her second studio album. Released last October, “Carnival Ride” has been certified double-platinum by the Recording Industry Association of America.

“Saturday Night Live” was one of the first shows affected when the Hollywood writers’ strike started last November, and it was the only late-night show shelved for the strike’s duration. It airs at 10:30 p.m. on NBC.

Underwood won her third Grammy earlier this month for best female country vocal performance for “Before He Cheats,” one of the hits off her “Some Hearts” album. The album was recently certified seven-times platinum, making it the best-selling solo female country debut in RIAA history, according to a news release. With the certification, it also is now the U.S. top-selling album by an “American Idol” contestant.
