What if you have amazing amounts of technical skill, but very little people skills… will you be overlooked for the job or the promotion? I’ve seen first-hand that knowing the right people can get me places, but ironically they aren’t always the people I think I SHOULD know. Huh? Generally knowing the right people infers knowing the ‘big wigs’, the ‘somebodies’. But surprisingly I’ve discovered sometimes it might be a friend who knows of a job. Sometimes it’s someone I’ve just met. It might be someone who works for the company, but isn’t high up. I say cultivate these relationships, but try to honestly and without giving up easily. In my opinion, you won’t get far if you’re just using the person. People can see through that, but people also want to see a healthy determination.

Now back to the original question. No, it’s not ALL about who you know. But it can help. If you have someone to root for you, someone to get your foot in the door… that’s a GREAT start! But you have to do the rest of it on your own. You can’t rely on that person. They have a life and a job to worry about. So definitely get to know others, try to honestly form some sort of a relationship, but don’t forget to have a skill to back it up. :)
