The Way You Walk

a-walk-on-the-beach-9.jpg There’s the strut, there’s the model walk, there’s fast pace, there’s slow pace. With so many ways people hold themselves as they walk it makes me wonder… what does my walk say about me? Some walks show confidence, some show insecurity. Taking a stroll on the beach shows relaxation. There’s a difference between pacing and a stride. Taking a hike is much different than a march. Prancing and tiptoeing are two totally different genres! ;) You can tread along a path or you can meander. Your walk can tell others you are depressed or happy. If you saunter you may look peaceful, but if you shuffle you may look clumsy.

Do we define people by their walk? I think so. I believe the way people walk and hold themselves gives us our first impression of them. But is the impression correct? Can you tell a lot by the way a person walks or is the person walking that way to fool you, to cover up an insecurity? If a model is walking on the catwalk can we correctly assume she/he is confident? What about a person who plods along with his/her head down… do you automatically think that person is unsure or sad or even angry?

Most of us have thought about they way we walk at some point in our lives. Now imagine that everyone else thinks about it too. That might change your perspective and you might not be as quick to make assumptions about that person. Walk means to get from one place to another, to travel. So how does that allow us to develop an opinion about someone? I believe there may be more to the way you walk.

I think that a walk can tell you a lot about a person- at least for the moment. An actor, in character, will walk differently than when out of character, in many cases. I think its not much different in reality- most people are playing a role, and one’s walk is merely one indicator of the role that person happens to be playing at the time. The person shuffling down the sidewalk looking at the ground might appear to be insecure or angry. But, perhaps that person just found out that a loved one has a terminal illness, and most of the time they are confident, happy, and carefree? The walk indicates the circumstances rather than the character beneath. The more I think about it, I believe that visible insecurity, whether displayed in a walk or some other manner, is typically genuine, while visible confidence is frequently artificial. To some degree, we know what we are projecting and also what is expected. But, maybe the walk is subtle enough to be accurate….

I agree. I think a person’s walk represents how he/she is feeling. The problem is, I believe, most people don’t think that way. People tend to get their first impression from the way a person ‘walks’. Many, including me — I have been guilty of this, think that person is the way he/she walks. Obviously the times I’ve taken the chance to get to know the person, I realized I assumed certain characteristics.

I see. I think I misunderstood what you were saying. I agree that first impressions are usually incomplete at best and completely incorrect at worst.
